Developer file previews on Apple platforms and Android prerelease builds

Getting Started

After installing Hitspace, follow the instructions for your platform:

  1. macOS: Open System Settings → Login Items & Extensions. Enable Quick Look and Sharing for Hitspace.
  2. iPhone and iPad: Open Hitspace, choose the Viewer tab, and tap Open a File. You can also long-press a file in Files and choose Open With or Share, then select Hitspace.
  3. Android prerelease: After installing an authorized test build, open Hitspace and tap Open a File, share a supported text file to Hitspace from another app, or use Paste from Clipboard for text you explicitly want to preview.

Using a Hitspace Android Prerelease

  • Files selected with Open a File appear on the home screen for quick access.
  • Use the search button inside a preview to find text and move between matches.
  • Use the wrap button for long Markdown or code lines.
  • Choose from System, Monokai, Dracula, One Dark, Solarized Light, and Solarized Dark themes.

Supported File Types

  • Markdown: .md, .markdown
  • JSON: .json, .geojson
  • YAML: .yml, .yaml
  • Tables: .csv, .tsv
  • Plain text: .txt and extensionless text files
  • Code: .swift, .py, .js, .ts, .kt, .rs, .go, .rb, .sh, .css, .sql, .c, .cpp, .java, .xml, .html, .php, .r, .pl, .diff, and more
  • Apple configs: .plist, .pbxproj

Troubleshooting

Can an Apple preview load content from the internet?

Yes. On macOS, iPhone, and iPad, HTML or Markdown can contain active scripts, images, links, or other remote resources. Only preview files you trust. Disconnect from the network first if you need to prevent an Apple preview from contacting a third party. Android previews block network loads.

Quick Look doesn't show formatted preview

  • Make sure the extension is enabled in System Settings → Login Items & Extensions
  • Try restarting Finder (Option-right-click Finder in Dock → Relaunch)
  • If previews were working but stopped, try quitting and reopening the app

Preview shows blank/black screen (macOS)

  • This can happen if the extension needs to be re-registered. Quit the app, relaunch it, and try again.

A recent file no longer opens (Android)

The file's provider may have moved it or revoked access. Tap Open a File and select it again. You can clear the recent-file list from the home screen without deleting the original files.

Hitspace says a file is too large or unsupported (Android)

Android previews are intentionally limited to text-based files up to 5 MB. Binary files and binary property lists are not rendered; convert a binary property list to XML first.
